143 . In all, there were forty-two kings (and one queen). Saul, David, and Solomon ruled over Israel before the kingdom divided under Solomon. Once divided, nineteen kings ruled the northern tribes (ten) of Israel and twenty kings ruled the southern tribes (two) of Judah.

144 . After the fall of Babylon to the Persian king Cyrus the Great in 538 BC, exiled Jews began to return to the land of Judah. Cyrus the Great ended the exile of the Jewish people in 537 BC, the year after he conquered Babylon, granting permission to return to Israel and rebuild the temple (Second Temple, 521–16 BC) under Zerubbabel. The return of the exiles was a gradual process rather than a single event, and many of the deportees and their descendants did not return.
